“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”

These are the words of Simon Sinek, the guy who garnered nearly 10 million views of his TED talk on powerful leadership. Sinek posits the most successful companies, people and ideas start with the why, not the what or the how.

A passionate, clarified why turbo-charges our efforts to learn, teach and lead with greater intention and conviction: rather than driven by the stress of accomplishing tasks, we become propelled by a vision we believe in.

 

Sadly, teachers are often too bogged down with the what (80% of my students need to pass the state test!) and the how (I need to administer 3 practice tests by February!). The why (I want my students to succeed in a life they love!) seems like an unnecessary decadence, the cherry on top of a 60-hour work week you most likely sacrifice for the sake of sleep.

 

But your why is what matters most.

As Sinek so awesomely put it, “If we want to feel an undying passion for our work, if we want to feel we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves, we all need to know our why.”

 

The world needs your why! And your students do, too.

 

Please take a few moments to reflect on why you do what you every day and then submit your answers in this survey. We’ll share what you all said in early May to kick off our Teacher Appreciation Week celebration.
